I tend to go online since books can quickly go out of date, but I also like these series of books (they have them on Linux, Shell Scripting,CLI training, etc.) since I think a lot of their content actually fits together nicely, and also has practical applications/exercises. Which I found (as a beginner) is really important, because if you don't understand how the piece you're learning fits into a project it's difficult to put things together.
